The Wedding Pro Show
Episode 70: Break Through Procrastination
Welcome to the second installment in our series…
What do you hope will be even better about your business one year from today?
It’s a question I asked in The Wedding Vendors Community, our free Facebook group, and the answers were all so good, we decided to do a podcast series on them.
We’re choosing one for each episode, and helping you reach it.
For today’s episode, we’re tackling procrastination.
The goal is to be better at not procrastinating this time next year.
I love this one, I’m a professional procrastinator.
Even just the concept of being better at it in a year is kind of ironic and funny to me.
How about we take this one and implement it for now instead of this time next year. We’re breaking through procrastination TODAY!
There are a ton of psychological reasons why we procrastinate, I’m just going to scratch the surface here today and go for the practical reasons, the kind that you might relate to in regards to your business.
Let’s start with the definition.
Procrastinate - to put off intentionally and habitually. I also like this definition - to put off the doing of something that should be done.
Want to know a secret? I even procrastinated writing this episode!
I didn’t even get that was what I was doing, but I can tell you why I procrastinate, and I bet you have the same reasons why you do.
1. Perfection. Perfectionism is often the reason why we put something off.
We think if we don’t have time to do it perfectly, we can’t even start. That sounds silly for me to even say out loud, because I know better, but it gets me sometimes.
I teach my membership members to not worry about perfection, and that done is better than perfect, because never doing it at all is even farther than having it done but not perfect. Right?
It’s something I definitely need to work on myself!
2. Getting inturrupted. I’m so afraid I’m going to get inturrupted in the middle of something, that I put off starting it.
Guess what? When I finally do the task I was dreading, I almost always get through it without being inturrupted.
I do have a couple of tricks to this that I’ll share with you.
3. Feeling like you don’t have time. This goes hand in hand with the first 2 reasons, you might think you don’t have time to get it perfect, or that you don’t have time to get it done before someone needs something.
Give time blocking a try. You’ll be really surprised how much it helps to play beat the clock.
You can also do time blocking to avoid the things that make you procrastinate, like being on your phone.
You can time block the time you spend leisurely on your phone.
For example, you could give yourself 15 minutes, use the timer, and when you’re done you’re done, then go be productive and bust through procrastination.
Your hot tip in this episode is an action item.
Think about what it is you really want to do. What’s holding you back?
I put off starting this podcast for a year because I was afraid I wouldn’t have the time to be consistent with it, but once I got started, I made sure I would.
Maybe yours is something small, or something big. Just start. Go for it!
I have to tell myself to take the fear of whatever it is I need to get started on, and turn that fear into fuel.
I hope that analogy helps you through your procrastination as much as it does for me.
Really do turn that fear into fuel.
Thank you as always for being here!
