The Wedding Pro Show
Episode 60: Are You an Imposter?
Let’s talk about Imposter Syndrome.
Have you heard of it?
Here’s what it is:
Feeling like you’re a phony, like at any moment someone is going to think you’re a fraud. Maybe you’re experiencing success but you don’t feel like you deserve it, or you don’t belong. Maybe you even feel like you got there through luck.
If you’ve listened to Episode 12 of The Wedding Pro Show, you KNOW that’s not true.
It affects anyone, regardless of their background, skill level, education, or social status.
In fact, it affects 80% of the population!
Can be paralyzing and keep you from moving forward, and often stems from perfectionism.
A long time ago, I started following an account called “The Flylady”. Our daughter was very little and I was overwhelmed with having a little, a home, and a growing business.
Do you ever feel like this? In your home, in your personal life, in your business? We all do, you’re not alone.
And… spoiler alert, you’re not an imposter.
How to overcome it:
Take action. Put one foot in front of the other, and in realize there’s no such thing as perfection.
Surround yourself with other action takers who are also fighting through these same self doubts.
Unfollow accounts that make you feel “less than secure” in yourself and your business.
If you’re on Instagram, and you see an account come across your feed or your stories, maybe it’s someone who does the same thing as you do in the wedding industry, and it makes you feel like you’re not “keeping up”, it’s okay to snooze or unfollow it.
I feel like this all the time. For example, when I see another podcaster doing something I might not be doing, or something I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t gotten to it yet, it can even make me feel a little sick in the pit of my stomach.
Then I remember my show is only 5 months old, and I’m out here putting one foot in front of the other with it, I love it, and I’m helping people, and that’s all that matters. So I keep taking action and keep putting out the next episode and that is so so so satisfying!
Hot tip:
Get support.
Have you heard this saying? You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.
The people we surround ourselves with are the biggest influence on our behavior, attitudes, and even results!
The people you associate with and the things they say determine as much as 95 percent of your success or failure in life. That’s huge, and it has huge consequences.
Are the people you’re around doubting your business? Often our friends and family don’t feel like our biggest supporters. If you feel this way, consider that it’s just because they love you and are trying to protect your feelings “in case your business fails”.
This is why we need each other. We know it’s not going to fail, just as much as we know the sun will come out again tomorrow.
I’m in coaching groups and masterminds that keep me feeling positive and KNOWING that I’m successful, even when that imposter tries to creep back in.
No matter what level we’re at, we all need it.
Please consider being a part of our coaching group, The Vendors Circle.
